What will you achieve?
This course is designed to give you a 360-degree view of museum roles. With its compelling storyline, this platform allows professionals to immerse themselves in the backstage of a museum.
Each lesson includes an introductory video that explains the objectives of the lesson and outlines the skills to be acquired. The lessons then consist of several episodes including videos, scripts, texts or podcasts that will teach you the key concepts to remember, definitions and a practical case study. At the end of the episode, you will take a test to move on to the next episode and thus validate the entire lesson. To obtain your certificate of achievement, you must complete the course and fill a feedback form/submit your feedback.
In the animation films “A day with…”, different characters will show you their day-to-day tasks. You will meet Adam, who works at the museum. Through his eyes, you will experience a range of scenarios. Adam will introduce you to his colleagues: curators, conservators, programming directors, etc.
In the “Key concepts” videos, Stephanos, your trainer for this course, will give you some key figures so that you understand its scope.
Together, Adam and Stephanos will provide you with an overview of the roles and functions of a museum today, completed, on each episode, by a podcast focusing on a specific example and a selected bibliography.
At the end of each episode, you will test your knowledge by taking a quiz. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive certification from the Louvre Abu Dhabi and France Muséums.
A museum plays an important role by presenting and conserving artworks and making them available to the widest possible audience...but how do all the tasks that make this possible fit together? This can sometimes be very difficult to grasp. These courses are designed to guide you through the world of museums.
Course number 1, “What are Museums for ?”, presents the different roles of a museum in today’s world.
- First of all, the scientific mission of museums is the main reason why they exist. What journey does an artwork embark upon before it is exhibited to the public? Which expert hands does it pass through on the way?
- In Episode 2, you will explore the social role of Museums. There would be no museums without people to visit them! Museums enhance personal and community wellbeing and have a phenomenal influence on quality of life. They provide premium resources and knowledge about artworks, and they encourage us to think about and question the world we live in. More than ever before, museums are working hard to gain a better understanding of the expectations of different types of visitors in order to offer them new visitor experiences.
- In Episode 3, Adam introduces you to the political role of a museum. Museums play an essential role not only in preserving and developing heritage but also in democratising access to culture. Public museums reflect the cultural ambitions of a state, a region or a city. Museums are therefore political: they support the vision of a community, and they embody and pass on its values . Museums are soft power tools of foreign policy.
- Episode 4 focuses on the economic role of a museum. Museums are economic stakeholders: they spend money to finance their activities, they produce income for local authorities and they can be touristic landmarks and attractions .
- Museums - even those those that focus on the art of the past - are not only stewards of history; they also have an educational role, irrespective of the period they deal with or the type of art they exhibit. Developing the artistic awareness of an increasingly wide audience also involves helping them to appreciate the art of today. This is the theme of the Episode 5, which is devoted to the creative role of museums.
